The Lord has commanded tithes and offerings from his people to sustain ministry. In the Old Testament it was at the sanctuary of the Lord, first the tabernacle, then the temple in Jerusalem. It was a fundamental duty. In the Lord Jesus Christ, the demands of the Law are fulfilled. But God’s claim on us remains at minimum that the first tenth of anything we earn or possess ought to belong to him. But even so, the Lord’s call on our lives and on being good stewards of our finances and possessions is to be generous and life-giving, providing for the service to the Lord, by all who are called to serve him.
