Michael Owen says:
The baptism of Jesus is a major turning point in the history of the cosmos, and it marks the official beginning of the gospel story. In Matthew’s telling of this event between Jesus and his cousin John, the action of baptism is heavy with meaning. Through baptism Jesus is shown to the audience as he truly is. He is the true climax of the biblical story. And he is the one who invites us to follow him as he moves through the waters and into ultimate goodness, truth, and beauty.
