The early church reaches a major new milestone in chapter 6 of Acts. Here the action shifts from the apostles to the new leadership that is arising out of the needs of the early community. The apostle’s appoint deacons for the first time to take care of the practical matters, freeing the apostle’s up to focus on their teaching ministry. Stephen is an anointed leader who excels in the deacon work and his Christian faith admirably and reaps a martyr’s death as a result. We are called to also be diligent in the Lord’s work that ministry runs smoothly and is always dependent on the Holy Spirit.
