Mustard, Yeast, and the Kingdom of God – Matthew 13:31-33

July 14, 2024

The Kingdom of God is a central concept in the New Testament as the expected Messiah was meant to be a King forever on David’s throne.  Jesus taught about the kingdom in numerous parables to correct misconceptions about what king of king he would be and what kind of kingdom he would be ruling.  The rather short parables about the mustard plant and the yeast illustrate growth.  Like mustard, the kingdom will grow from a tiny seed to a huge plant.  But what does the yeast represent?  Does it refer to the growing kingdom as well or rather the evil that infiltrates the kingdom?
