Peter has a vision on his roof where he is told to go and slay whatever animal he wanted to eat – not to hold back, even from the unclean. He had spent his whole life in a system whereby what you eat was part of who you were. To open it up like this was shocking. And then, to top it off, visitors came from this gentile centurion, inviting Peter to come to his home and share. Peter realized that God was setting up a divine appointment, but after doing it he was going to face intense criticism. Yet, he went, he proclaimed the risen Lord and received an amazing reception. The people in Cornelius’s house were ready, they saw how the man loved God, and they were searching for the same thing, a loving relationship with the Lord. Peter watched them listen and drink in every word, and then the Holy Spirit came upon them with power. So, Peter said, this is God’s work, let me not stand in the way of it.
