Paul uses the Old Testament story of Hagar and Sarah to illustrate how God will work his purpose out no matter what people try on their own to accomplish. Against all expectations, Isaac, the child of the promise does come and is a miracle baby. Ishmael, born of Hagar, is all natural, a choice of humans to come up with their own solution without God. So far as what God is doing, if you want to come up with your own solution, it is a spiritual dead end.
