All four gospels mention John the Baptist as one who is preparing the way for the ministry of Jesus. He calls himself a voice in the desert. Matthew summarized his message: the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven, meaning the Messiah, the Son of God will rule on earth. Therefore, John says, we need to prepare our hearts.
