Joseph was engaged to Mary, which was practically as good as married, without the wedding yet and did not live together yet. then he found out that Mary was pregnant. He know the child wasn’t his, so he decided to divorce her, but do it quietly in order to protect her. His perspective changes after an angel visits him and explains what’s happening to Mary, is part of a much bigger plan.
