Today we revisit ” The parable of the Prodigal Son” as it is called. Where did the word “prodigal” come from and what do you think it means? Ask yourself, what is the heart, the key point Jesus is revealing in this story? Take note of any words and concepts that are repeated as we consider the other 2 short parables (The lost sheep and the lost coin–Luke 15:3-10) and how they fit in with the Lost son story. Repentance is mentioned 3 times, but never apart from rejoicing. So, is the primary point of the parables to repent or rejoice? How does Rembrandt’s painting “she light” on this? Indeed, this is the “Parable of the Parables”, all types of sinners are called and drawn to the heart of a scandalously gracious God and Father whose love is more lavish and prodigal than we dare to imagine! So put your head on your Fathers Heart; receive His blessed prodigal love and grace; and so, become His Prodigal Followers repenting with wholehearted rejoicing all the days of your life!
