Joy can be fleeting in our world today. Sometimes we only catch glimpses of it along the way. Perhaps the shepherds were tired of hearing about its possibility and so very sure of the possible joy killers in their lives, perhaps the death of a loved one, the price of wool having gone down and down, the things asked of them by the owners, landlords and overlords might have become too heavy and odious. Yet when God sent his Son into the world, He planned to guarantee our joy because its source is heaven itself, both where Jesus came from and to where he would return. One of the primary purposes of his arrival was to guarantee our joy. And so we sing today.
