The arrival of the Magi into Israel and Jerusalem is the dawning of a new era in God’s mission to bring the world to worship him. The kings present the offerings of the ages, all of them valuable and all of them symbolic of the riches of culture presented to the King, who embodies the whole people group. Gold is always valuable, frankincense is the fragrance of deity, myrrh is what is used to honor the fallen kings. All 3 gifts are useful in the marketplaces of Egypt, where the holy family will hide until Herod has passed. All 3 gifts symbolize the royalty and divinity of Jesus.
